General Information

Objective
: To provide funding that will promote the research endeavors and interests of the OTA members.

Investigator Requirements : The principal investigator or co-principal investigator must be an OTA or AONA member, in good standing, and the primary research institution must be located in North America.

Research Topics/Grant Cycles/Award Levels : For the 2010 grant cycle, OTA will offer the following grants:

Directed topic research grants:

  • rhBMP-2 ($65,000/year, 2 - 3 year funding cycle)
  • Clinical Study: ($50,000/year, 3 year funding cycle)
    This clinical study will be solicited through a request for proposals (RFP) in the following areas:
    - Local vs. Systemic Antibiotics for Orthopaedic Infections
    - Healing of Bone Defects
    - Surgical Infection Prevention and Treatment
    - Economic Outcomes in Trauma Care
    - Alternative Wound Management Strategies

The following grants are available for any research issue related to musculoskeletal trauma , excluding product development.

  • Clinical Research Grants ($40,000/year, 2 year grant cycle)
  • Basic Research Grants ($25,000, 1 year grant cycle)
  • Resident Research Grants ($10,000, 1 year grant cycle)

Preferred Recipients: Pilot studies to collect preliminary data for larger grant submissions through NIH, OREF, etc., multicenter trials.

Submissions:
For all grant applications, excluding resident grant applications:
Preproposal applications should be submitted on-line no later than February 1st. Accepted preproposals will be invited to submit a full grant application due to the OTA Business Office by June 7th.  Specific guidelines and a grant submission template for full grant applications are provided with the application.

Resident Grant Applications:
Resident grants will not require full preproposals, but will be short full submissions. The resident grants will be awarded twice yearly.
- January 12, 2010 deadline for June 1, 2010 Award
- June 21, 2010 deadline for January 1, 2011 Award

Review Process (full grant applications):
For all grant applications, excluding resident grant applications:
All pre-proposals are reviewed "blinded" by the OTA Research Committee which will establish scientific merit scores and ranking. Applicants will be notified by March of their acceptance. Investigators invited to submit full applications will have until June 7th to submit. The OTA Board of Directors will make the final decision about awards at the October OTA Annual Meeting.

Resident Grant Applications:
Applications will be reviewed by the OTA Research Committee which will establish scientific merit scores and ranking. The OTA Board of Directors will review and approve the Research Committee's recommended award recipients. Residents applying by the January 12th deadline will be notified by April, and Residents applying by the June 21st deadline will be notified by November.

Reports: Reports of expenditures must be prepared one year after receiving the award. For grants extending beyond one year, reports must be submitted every October 1st after the award was first issued. The renewal of grant funding for the following year will be contingent on satisfactory progress during the previous funding period. Reports should be submitted to the OTA sixty (60) days after the grant has terminated. Research reports must be prepared and submitted with the financial reports.
