Guidelines for OTA Research Grants

General Information
Objective : To provide funding that will promote the research endeavors and interests of the OTA members.
Investigator Requirements : The principal investigator or co-principal investigator must be an OTA or AONA member, in good standing, and the primary research institution must be located in North America.
Research Topics/Grant Cycles/Award Levels : For the 2011 grant cycle, OTA will offer the following grants:
The following grants are available for any research issue related to musculoskeletal trauma (excluding product development)
* Clinical Research Grants ($40,000 maximum/year, 2 year grant cycle)
* Basic Research Grants ($25,000 maximum, 1 year grant cycle)
* Resident Research Grants ($10.000, 1 year grant cycle)
Note: Resident grant applications will not require full preproposals, but will be short full submissions. Resident grants will be offered twice yearly (see deadline dates below).
Directed topic research grants:
The clinical use of rhBMP-2 ($65,000/year, 2-3 year funding cycle)
*Note: the rhBMP-2 grant is restricted to clinical research.
Clinical studies ($50,000 maximum/year, 3 year funding cycle) in the following areas:
- Effectiveness of Trauma Management Systems in Geriatric Patients
- New Technology for Management of Orthopaedic Infection
- Effectiveness of Systemic Therapies on Healing in Systemically Impaired Patients
- Physiological Response to Trauma in Elderly Patients
Submissions:
For all grant applications, excluding resident grant applications:
Preproposal applications should be submitted on-line no later than February 7th. Accepted preproposals
will be invited to submit a full grant application due to
the OTA Business Office by June 7th. Specific guidelines and a grant submission template for full grant applications are provided with the application.
Resident Grant Applications:
Resident grants will not require full preproposals, but will be short full submissions. The resident grants will be awarded twice yearly.
- December 6, 2010 deadline for June 1, 2011 Award
- June 21, 2011 deadline for January 1, 2012 Award
Review Process (full grant applications):
For all grant applications, excluding resident grant applications:
All pre-proposals are reviewed "blinded" by the OTA Research
Committee which will establish scientific merit scores and
ranking. Applicants will be notified by March of their
acceptance. Investigators invited to submit full
applications will have until June 7th to submit. The OTA Board of Directors will make the final decision about awards at the October OTA Annual Meeting.
Resident Grant Applications:
Applications will be reviewed by the OTA Research Committee
which will establish scientific merit scores and ranking.
The OTA Board of Directors will review and approve the
Research Committee's recommended award recipients. Residents
applying by the December 6, 2010 deadline will be notified by March. Residents applying by the June 21, 2011 deadline will be notified by November.
Reports: Reports of expenditures must be prepared one year after receiving the award. For grants extending beyond one year, reports must be submitted every October 1st after the award was first issued. The renewal of grant funding for the following year will be contingent on satisfactory progress during the previous funding period. Reports should be submitted to the OTA sixty (60) days after the grant has terminated. Research reports must be prepared and submitted with the financial reports.
