The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia seeks candidates for a tenure-ineligible or tenure-eligible Assistant Professor. This clinical faculty position is responsible for providing exceptional patient care in the management of orthopaedic trauma with a strong interest in trauma of the lower extremity, foot and ankle. Salary and tenure status are dependent upon qualifications.

Candidates must have a MD and be board-eligible or board-certified as well as completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery concentrating in trauma or foot and ankle. To be considered for the tenure-eligible position, candidates must have experience in basic or clinical research and a strong interest in a career in academic medicine. Tenure-ineligible position may be eligible to convert to tenure-eligible at an appropriate time in the future, consistent with School of Medicine Promotion and Tenure guidelines and candidate qualifications.

The incumbent joins a group of 20 Orthopaedic faculty who share emergency call coverage and assist in management of other musculoskeletal conditions outside of the spine domain as needed for the Central Virginia region. Here is an exciting, hospital based opportunity for an Ortho/Trauma Surgeon. Winchester Medical Center (WMC) is located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia – only 45 minutes to Dulles International Airport and 60 minutes from Washington D.C.

Primary job functions include responsibility for the surgical care of the ortho trauma patient admitted to WMC, refinement of trauma care processes with community orthopaedic surgeons, and foster collaborative efforts with the Orthopaedic Service Line, Trauma Nurse Coordinator, existing Fracture Care Clinic and related departments/services. The community is served by 10 orthopaedic surgeons in long standing private practices. The health system has 5 other hospitals with 3 providing orthopaedic care and would serve as referral sources. Currently, two private orthopedic practices providing services to WMC jointly support the further development of the orthopaedic trauma program.

WMC is a 411 bed regional referral center, with 4 newly designed and dedicated ortho OR rooms for trauma and elective practice, and an attached multi-specialty outpatient surgery facility. Program has a dedicated trauma surgical OR with defined surgical teams, nurse practitioner, and dedicated clinical office space for patient follow up. The hospital is completing a major hospital expansion and has a 56,000 square-foot Wellness & Fitness Center on its campus. With over 300 physicians on the Medical Staff and a service area exceeding 500,000, the hospital works closely with physicians to provide high quality patient care. We have resources and experience in place and are now looking for a leader to take us to the next level of excellence.
